5 Killed, 7 Injured Due To Tire Malfunction

TireBlowout5

Vehicles are made up of thousands of parts and when any of these parts malfunction, they can cause a serious accident. An example of this is a recent tire malfunction in Osceola County that caused a fatal accident.

The fatal crash occurred on the evening of April 27 on Florida’s Turnpike in Kenansville. The accident closed all the northbound lanes of the roadway near mile marker 211 overnight.

The crash happened when a Ford E-350 passenger van overturned several times and ran off the roadway. It then hit a guardrail and came to rest in a ditch. Investigators from the Florida Highway Patrol believe the crash happened when the van suffered a tire malfunction.

Five people died at the accident scene. Seven others were injured. The driver went by ambulance to Osceola Regional Medical Center, while four passengers were transported there by helicopter. Two passengers were airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

Of those involved in the crash, at least 10 were men and women from areas of South Florida, including Fort Pierce, Pompano Beach, Port Saint Lucie, and West Palm Beach. The roads were closed for quite some time. Traffic was diverted off the Turnpike at State Road 60 (Exit 193). The crash is still under investigation.

Dangers of Tire Malfunctions

Tires are the only thing separating a vehicle from the roadway, so even a minor tire issue can cause a crash or other major issue. Here’s a look at some common dangers to be aware of:

  • Loss of vehicle control. A sudden blowout can be caused by underinflation, overloading, or tread separation. This can lead to immediate loss of control, especially at highway speeds. This is particularly dangerous for SUVs and trucks, which are more prone to rollovers.
  • Increased braking distance. Tires with worn tread or incorrect pressure reduce the tire’s grip on the road. This can significantly increase the distance required to stop, especially in wet or icy conditions, heightening the risk of rear-end collisions.
  • Hydroplaning and skidding. Bald or underinflated tires can’t channel water away effectively. This increases the chances of hydroplaning, which occurs when the tires lose contact with the road. Hydroplaning can lead to skids and crashes.
  • Tread separation. Manufacturing defects or long-term wear can cause the tread to separate from the rest of the tire. At high speeds, this can result in catastrophic tire failure and severe vehicle instability.
  • Excessive weight can overheat tires and lead to blowouts. This is especially risky during long trips or when carrying heavy cargo
