Bicyclist Killed In Kissimmee Accident

Car accidents are common on busy roads. Drivers are supposed to stop after an accident and they often do, but in some cases, they flee the scene. The drivers keep on going, leaving their victims for dead.
Sadly, this was recently the case in Kissimmee. Florida Highway Patrol is searching for a driver who fled the scene after striking a bicyclist in the early morning hours of June 9 in Osceola County.
The crash occurred shortly after midnight near Pleasant Hill Road and Sun Cove Drive. Investigators say a northbound vehicle hit a bicyclist who was crossing the intersection. The impact threw the cyclist into the outer northbound lane, where a Volkswagen Jetta was unable to avoid hitting him, despite attempting to swerve.
Both vehicles reportedly had a green light at the time. The first vehicle — a newer model black Honda Accord, according to witnesses — continued north without stopping.
The bicyclist, an unidentified man, died at the accident scene. The medical examiner is working to confirm the victim’s identity.
Local residents say the road is poorly lit and heavily trafficked. Drivers call it dangerous, and late at night or early in the morning, it can also be dark and confusing. Still, residents say “leaving the scene is wrong. You need to stop and help.”
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
Dangers of Hit and Run Crashes
Hit and run crashes are especially dangerous because they often leave victims without immediate medical assistance. When a driver flees instead of calling for help, precious minutes are lost, which means potentially survivable injuries can easily become fatal ones.
These incidents also hinder law enforcement’s ability to investigate the crash thoroughly and hold the responsible party accountable. Without the driver’s identity, victims and their families may struggle to receive compensation for medical bills, lost income, or funeral costs.
Hit and runs can also cause traffic disruptions, secondary accidents, and general confusion at the scene. They also contribute to a broader culture of irresponsibility on the road. If drivers believe they can escape consequences, they’re less likely to act responsibly in the future. This undermines public safety and weakens trust in the legal system.
Florida has a high volume of hit and runs. The state sees more than 100,000 hit and run crashes every year. In 2023, 271 people died in these accidents throughout the state. Hit and run accidents account for about 25% of all crashes in Florida.
Trends show a 40% increase in hit and runs in the state since 2011. Most of these incidents (roughly 85%) occur during dawn, dusk, or nighttime, when visibility is low.
