Man Faces DUI Manslaughter Charge After Fatal Thanksgiving Crash

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time of fun, food, and family togetherness. However, a Thanksgiving Day crash in Florida resulted in just the opposite, causing injuries and fatalities.
Sadly, a young woman was killed and several others were injured in the accident, which happened in Osceola County just before midnight on November 27.
Three vehicles were involved in the crash. An Acura MDX, driven by a 44-year-old man from Davenport, was heading west on Poinciana Parkway, near Sienna Boulevard. A Hyundai Tucson, driven by a 34-year-old woman from Kissimmee, was stopped on Poinciana Parkway, ahead of the Acura. A Ford F-150, driven by a 40-year-old man from Apopka, was stopped in the westbound lane ahead of the Hyundai.
The driver of the Acura failed to stop for the Hyundai. This resulted in a rear-end accident. The impact caused the Hyundai to overturn and collide with the Ford F-150.
Two women in the Hyundai, ages 18 and 34, were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The 18-year-old woman from Georgia later died at Osceola Regional Medical Center. Four other passengers in the vehicle were also taken to hospitals.
The driver of the Ford F-150 was not injured. He remained at the accident scene. The driver of the Acura was arrested for DUI manslaughter in the death of the 18-year-old woman. He was booked into the Osceola County Jail. The crash is still under investigation.
Failure to Stop for Vehicles
There are situations in which a driver does not yield, slow down, or come to a full stop when required by law. This often leads to rear-end collisions, T-bone crashes, pedestrian or cyclist injuries, and severe multi-vehicle accidents. These violations are typically treated as negligent driving and can carry fines, points on a license, and civil liability.
Here is a look at some common situations where drivers fail to stop:
- Stop signs. Drivers rolling through or ignoring stop signs frequently cause intersection crashes.
- Red lights. Running a red light often results in high-speed, side-impact collisions.
- School buses. Passing a stopped school bus with flashing lights is illegal in most states and carries serious penalties.
- Yield intersections. Drivers may fail to yield to oncoming traffic when merging or turning left.
- Emergency vehicles. Drivers must pull over and stop for police, fire, and ambulance vehicles with lights and sirens activated.
- Stopped traffic or turning vehicles. Failing to stop for slowed or stopped cars ahead is a leading cause of rear-end accidents.
Why do drivers fail to stop? Here are some possible reasons:
- Distracted driving
- Speeding or misjudging stopping distance
- Impaired driving
- Weather-related visibility issues
- Aggressive or impatient driving
- Fatigue
