Man Killed In Osceola County Motorcycle Crash

Motorcycle crashes can be devastating and even fatal. Just one wrong move or a moment of distraction can cause a motorcycle to go off the road and cause an accident.
A man recently died in a motorcycle crash in Osceola County. The fatal crash occurred on the morning of July 18 on Bill Beck Boulevard, near Line Drive.
A crash report from the Florida Highway Patrol stated that the man was riding a motorcycle south on Bill Beck Boulevard. He tried to go around a curve but ran off the roadway to the left. As a result, the motorcycle hit a curb and a utility pole.
The man was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. The man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The man’s identity has not been released as the medical examiner’s office finishes its report. The accident is still under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Dangers of Motorcycles Leaving the Roadway
A motorcycle leaving the roadway is one of the most dangerous types of crashes because riders have very little protection from the impact. Unlike drivers in passenger vehicles, motorcyclists do not have a steel frame, airbags, or seat belts to absorb crash forces. Even a brief trip off the pavement can quickly turn into a catastrophic accident.
Here are some of the reasons why running off the road is so dangerous on a motorcycle:
- Loss of traction. Roadways are designed to provide good tire grip. Once a motorcycle leaves the pavement, it may encounter loose gravel, dirt or mud, sand, wet grass, or uneven terrain. These surfaces dramatically reduce traction, making it difficult for the rider to brake or steer safely.
- Fixed objects become deadly hazards. Road shoulders and roadsides often contain obstacles such as trees, utility poles, guardrails, fences, mailboxes, culverts, and signposts. A collision can cause injuries or fatalities.
- Increased risk of being thrown from the motorcycle. Motorcycles can become unstable when transitioning from pavement to an uneven shoulder. If the bike digs into soft ground or strikes an obstacle, the rider may be ejected.
- Difficult reentry onto the road. Many riders attempt to steer back onto the pavement after leaving the roadway. This can be hazardous because:
- The pavement edge may be several inches higher than the shoulder.
- Riders may overcorrect after regaining traction.
- Overcorrection can cause the motorcycle to cross into oncoming traffic or slide into another lane.
- High potential for rollovers or slides. Uneven ground, ditches, and embankments can cause a motorcycle to:
- Low-side (slide out beneath the rider)
- High-side (violently flip the rider over the bike)
- Strike an embankment and overturn
