What Are Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

Today, Kissimmee car accident lawyer, Michelle Incandela explains uninsured or underinsured motorist (UM) coverage and its importance.

What is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, if purchased as part of your policy, can help you recover for your injuries if the at-fault driver does not have insurance or carry bodily injury coverage. In Florida, bodily injury coverage is not required.

Following an accident, you would first look to the at-fault party’s insurance to make a claim for the injuries you sustained. If the other driver does not have this bodily injury coverage, you can then make a claim to your insurance company through the UM coverage portion of your policy, seeking to recover for your injuries sustained.

When is Uninsured Motorist Coverage Helpful?

UM coverage can also be extremely beneficial when a motorist causes an accident and leaves the scene. It may also apply you are riding in a vehicle and neither party has bodily injury coverage. As you can see, it is very important to explore UM coverage under your policy, and it should be added if you do not already have it. Watch the video to learn more.
