5 Injured In Multi-Vehicle Crash

Pileup

Many car accidents involve just one or two vehicles. When there are a lot of vehicles in one area, though, such as on a highway, multiple-vehicle crashes are more likely to occur.

A five-vehicle crash recently shut down several lanes of the Florida Turnpike in Osceola County.

The accident happened on the morning of December 14 at mile marker 215 of the turnpike.

The crash happened in the northbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike, near the Canoe Creek service plaza. There are not many details about what happened, but five vehicles were involved in the accident. They include three semi trucks, a Toyota RAV4 SUV, and a RAM 3500 pickup truck.

Five people were injured in the crash. All were taken to Osceola Regional Hospital for medical treatment. Two were severely injured and had to be airlifted there.

Images from the scene show dozens of cardboard boxes in and alongside the road. The lanes later reopened.

What to Know About Multi-Vehicle Accidents

Multi-vehicle accidents are common where there are a lot of vehicles in one area, so they tend to occur on freeways rather than on city streets. This may be due to a chain-reaction crash in bumper-to-bumper traffic. These accidents can also occur at higher speeds, with drivers finding it difficult to stop in time to avoid a crash.

Here are several reasons why multi-vehicle accidents occur:

  • Weather conditions. Poor weather conditions can affect a driver’s ability to see the road ahead. This can reduce their ability to control their vehicle and make it harder for them to slow down in the event of a sudden pile-up on the freeway. Fog and snow are the most challenging examples of inclement weather.
  • Texting while driving has become an epidemic. It leads to more than 3,000 fatalities every year. While texting is the most dangerous activity to do while behind the wheel, other activities such as reading, eating, grooming, and dealing with children and pets can also impair a driver’s focus and ability to drive safely.
  • Reckless driving. Aggressive driving is becoming increasingly common. Behaviors such as tailgating, unsafe lane changes, and speeding increase the likelihood of a multi-vehicle crash.
  • Driving while drowsy is a serious threat to everyone on the road. It is so severe that it is often compared to drunk driving. If a driver falls asleep while behind the wheel, many things can happen. The driver may go off the road or cause a huge pileup

Multi-vehicle crashes can lead to significant damages. With semi trucks involved in this crash, the outcome could have been a lot worse.
