6 Killed In Osceola County Crash

In an instant, a serious car accident can occur. A driver may get into the adjacent lane to pass a vehicle and end up causing a life-changing crash. Sadly, this was recently the case in Osceola County. Six people were killed in a head-on crash after the driver of an SUV attempted to pass multiple vehicles.
The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of June 21 on State Road 60, near South Kenansville Road. An SUV was traveling westbound on State Road 60 as a semi truck traveled east. The driver of the SUV attempted to pass several vehicles. While merging back into the westbound lanes, the SUV lost control. This caused the left side of the SUV to hit the front of the semi truck.
The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire. They were quickly engulfed in flames. All six of the SUV’s occupants — allegedly three adults and three children — were trapped inside. All six died at the accident scene. Their identities were not disclosed.
The driver of the semi truck — a 36-year-old Miami Gardens man — suffered minor injuries in the crash. He was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. The accident is still under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Getting Trapped Inside a Car
Getting trapped inside a car during a fire is an extremely dangerous situation. When a car catches fire:
- Heat rises rapidly inside the car. Within minutes, temperatures can become lethal.
- Toxic fumes from burning plastics, seats, and other materials can knock you unconscious.
- Doors or locks might malfunction due to melted components.
- Windows may shatter under extreme heat, but tempered glass can also become hard to break if you’re inside.
If you’re trapped in a car during a fire, you need to act fast:
- Try to unlock and open doors immediately. Power locks may still work, but if locks are stuck, move to another door.
- Break a window if necessary. Aim for side windows, not the windshield. Use a window breaker tool, metal part of the headrest, or anything sharp or heavy. A good tip is to kick the corner of the side window if necessary.
- Get low and cover your nose. Smoke rises. Try to stay below it and cover your mouth with cloth to avoid inhaling toxic fumes.
- Exit and get as far from the car as possible. Run at least 100 feet away, as car fires can lead to explosions.
