Kissimmee Woman Killed In Pedestrian Crash On U.S. 192

HighwayNight

Being a pedestrian is risky business in Florida. There are so many people around and drivers are not always paying attention, resulting in serious or even fatal pedestrian accidents.

A 27-year-old woman from Kissimmee was hit and killed in an accident while crossing a road. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of July 30 on U.S. 192 near Westside Boulevard.

A Ford Fusion, driven by a 45-year-old Clermont man, was heading east in the inside lane of Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway. The woman was walking north across the road, outside of a marked crosswalk, when the driver swerved in an attempt to avoid her. Despite his efforts, the vehicle hit the pedestrian.

The woman was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she later died. Her family has been notified. The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured. He remained at the accident scene.

The crash is still under investigation. No additional details have been released.

What to Know About Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrian accidents are often severe due to the vulnerability of those on foot. Common causes include:

  • Driver negligence (including speeding, distracted driving, and failure to yield).
  • Poor visibility (such as nighttime and weather conditions).
  • Crossing outside crosswalks or against signals.
  • Walking while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Injuries can be serious. Pedestrians lack protection, so injuries may include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries.
  • Broken bones.
  • Spinal cord damage.
  • Internal injuries.

It’s important to know that liability is not always clear-cut. While drivers are most often the ones at fault, pedestrians can also bear some or all of the responsibility if they jaywalk, cross against signals, or act recklessly.

Police and medical reports are crucial. You should always report the incident and seek immediate medical attention. Even if your injuries feel minor, you could be hurt more than you realize. Injuries sometimes show up days or weeks later, so see a doctor right away. Documentation is key for legal claims, so get medical records promptly.

Victims of pedestrian accidents may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. If a person was killed in an accident, wrongful death damages may be available for families. But you need to act quickly. In Florida, the statute of limitations for most personal injury claims is two years. This means you generally have two years from the date of the injury to file a lawsuit. Anytime after that and you lose your rights to compensation.
