Man Killed After Car Goes In Retention Pond

CarAccidentPond3

When driving, it’s important to stay focused and in control. One wrong move can take a vehicle off the road and into a body of water, causing a fatal accident.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Kissimmee. A man was killed when his car went into a retention pond. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of May 30 in Kissimmee.

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash, which happened on Waters Edge Drive near Blue Bayou Drive in Osceola County. A 23-year-old man from Kissimmee was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer southbound on Waters Edge Drive. He was negotiating a curve when he lost control. This caused his vehicle to overturn into a nearby pond. The man died at the accident scene.

Both directions of Waters Edge Drive were shut down as troopers investigated the crash.

Water-Related Car Accidents

Car accidents involving vehicles entering water, such as rivers, lakes, or canals, are not as common as other types of accidents but are extremely dangerous. Hundreds of deaths occur each year in the United States due to vehicles becoming submerged in water. These crashes often result from losing control on slick roads, veering off bridges or embankments, or being pushed into water during multi-car accidents.

There are several ways in which water accidents can be deadly:

  • Vehicle submersion: A car can become fully submerged in as little as 30 seconds, leaving little time for escape.
  • Panic and disorientation. Victims may become disoriented underwater, especially at night or in murky conditions.
  • Power windows. These often stop working quickly after submersion, so escape is easier if acted on quickly.

In addition, water pressure makes the doors impossible to open. The window glass is also too strong to be broken easily.

To avoid panic, follow POGO for the escape procedure:

  • Pop/release seatbelt. Release children from seatbelts as quickly as possible.
  • Open or break windows.
  • Get out – children should be pushed out of the window first, and followed immediately (climb atop the car and then call for help or get to shore).

To break the window, you’ll need a special tool. Two of the most popular are the LifeHammer and ResQMe. The Lifehammer has a hardened-steel point to help crack open the window, while the ResQMe keychain uses a spring-loaded mechanism to shatter glass. It’s best to use these on the side windows, as they are not as strong.

Your best bet is to avoid crashing into a body of water altogether. Follow the rules of the road. Be careful when going around curves. Do not go over the speed limit. If you must drive during dawn or dusk, turn your headlights on. Be extra cautious when crossing a bridge or when next to the side of a mountain, since these roads are often more difficult to navigate.
