Motorcyclist Killed After Hitting Guardrail

Guardrail3

When riding a motorcycle, riders need to be alert and aware of their surroundings. The roads are not always straight and a curve can cause a motorcyclist to easily lose control if they don’t approach it the right way. They could even get into a catastrophic or fatal crash.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Osceola County. A man was killed after his motorcycle went off the road. The fatal accident happened on the evening of March 7 in Kissimmee.

A 39-year-old man from Davenport was riding a motorcycle on State Road 429, near Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway. He was approaching a curve when he ran off the road and hit a guardrail. The man was ejected from the motorcycle.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to the area of mile marker 5 and pronounced the man dead at the accident scene. The man was wearing a helmet.Dangers of Hitting Guardrails

Guardrails are metal devices that serve as barriers. They protect drivers by keeping vehicles on the road. They are supposed to work by absorbing the impact of a collision and preventing the vehicle from leaving the roadway. However, guardrails have come under scrutiny in recent years. That’s because their design has been modified, so instead of preventing accidents, they can potentially cause severe or fatal accidents.

Your motorcycle or other vehicle may be totaled. Plus, hitting a guardrail can result in injuries such as broken bones, lacerations, brain injuries, and even amputations.

That’s because some guardrails are defective. One guardrail in particular, the ET-Plus guardrail system manufactured by Trinity Industries is believed to have caused numerous injuries and deaths. The main reason for this is because the end terminal of the guardrail system was modified after testing. This caused the barrier to malfunction. Instead of crumpling or curling as it absorbed the collision, the guardrail remained stiff, causing serious injury to the occupants.

Design flaws are common. Guardrails are supposed to telescope when they’re impacted. This is supposed to slow down the vehicle and absorb some of the impact. When they don’t telescope as they’re designed to, the vehicle can be impaled by the guardrail and occupants can be fatally injured.

Serious car accidents can occur when a guardrail is not installed properly. Some construction companies and road crews may take shortcuts when it comes to installing guardrails or they may simply not install them properly due to a lack of knowledge. Guardrail installation crews often struggled when installing X-LITE end terminals because the instructions on proper placement and installation were unclear.
