Woman Killed In Osceola County Pedestrian Accident

Pedestrians do not always have the right of way. They need to be mindful of where they are crossing the road, especially in busy areas where vehicles travel at high speeds.
Attempting to cross the Orange Blossom Trail as a pedestrian is never a good decision. Many people speed on this busy road. Drivers are not always looking for pedestrians.
Sadly, a woman was recently killed while crossing the Orange Blossom Trail (U.S.17-92) in Osceola County just after midnight on May 10. The accident happened north of The Oaks Boulevard. The pedestrian was in a crosswalk at the time. She was running across east to west when she was hit by a Toyota Highlander.
The pedestrian, a 32-year-old woman, was taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center, where she later died. The driver of the Toyota, who was not identified, remained at the accident scene. The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
Crossing Streets Safely
Crossing streets safely is important for preventing accidents and staying protected, especially in busy or unfamiliar areas. Here are key safety tips:
- Use crosswalks. Always cross at marked crosswalks or intersections where drivers expect pedestrians.
- Obey signals. Follow pedestrian traffic signals and only cross when you see the walk sign.
- Look both ways. Look left, right, and left again before crossing, even if you have the signal.
- Stay visible. Make eye contact with drivers and avoid crossing from between parked cars.
- Avoid distractions. Put away phones and remove headphones when crossing.
- Walk, don’t run. Always walk across the street, as running increases the risk of falling.
- Be extra cautious at night. Wear light-colored or reflective clothing and use a flashlight if needed.
Drivers also play a role in preventing pedestrian accidents. Here are some actions they can take to enhance safety:
- Stay alert. Avoid distractions like texting, eating, or using a phone. Watch for pedestrians at all times.
- Obey speed limits. Driving at or below the speed limit, especially in school zones and neighborhoods, gives more time to react.
- Yield at crosswalks. Always stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
- Be cautious at night and in poor weather. Reduced visibility makes it harder to see pedestrians, so use headlights and drive slowly.
- Avoid passing stopped vehicles at crosswalks. They may be stopped for pedestrians crossing the street.
- Use extra caution when turning. Pedestrians may be crossing at intersections, so be sure to check crosswalks before making a turn.
- Never drive under the influence. Drugs and alcohol impair reaction time and judgment.
