1 Killed, 2 Injured In Crash
Intersections can be dangerous. Traffic can be coming from multiple directions, making it hard to understand who has the right of way. This can lead to serious and even fatal accidents.
Sadly, this was recently the case in Marion County. A young woman was killed and two others were injured when two vehicles collided at an intersection. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of June 8 at the intersection of SW 95th Circle and County Road 484.
An 18-year-old Ocala woman was killed and two others were injured — one of them a 2-year-old boy — when a pickup truck struck their sedan Saturday in Marion County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 4:42 p.m. at the intersection of SW 95th Circle and County Road 484, troopers said.
A sedan was traveling southbound in the right turn lane of SW 95th Circle as a pickup truck headed west on CR 484. When the sedan entered the intersection, the front of the pickup truck hit its left side. Both vehicles ended up on the south shoulder of CR 484.
The driver of the sedan, a 20-year-old Ocala man, suffered critical injuries in the crash. His passenger, an 18-year-old woman also from Ocala, was killed in the accident. Also inside the sedan was a 2-year-old Ocala boy, who suffered serious injuries in the crash. While the boy was wearing a child restraint, neither the man nor the woman was wearing a seat belt.
There were three people inside the pickup truck. The driver was a 43-year-old man, and the passengers were a 38-year-old woman and 2-year-old boy. All were from Minneola. The man and woman in the pickup truck were not wearing seat belts but the 2-year-old boy was wearing a child restraint.
Causes of Intersection Crashes
Intersections can be complex. Here are some reasons why accidents occur:
- Red light running. This is one of the most common causes. Drivers running red lights can cause serious side-impact collisions.
- Failure to yield. This often occurs when drivers do not yield the right of way at stop signs or during left turns.
- High speeds can reduce reaction time and increase the severity of crashes.
- Distracted driving. Use of mobile phones, eating, or other distractions can lead to inattentiveness at intersections.
- Impaired driving. Alcohol or drug impairment can affect judgment and reaction times.
- Complex traffic patterns. Intersections with multiple lanes, turns, and pedestrian crossings can confuse drivers.
