3 Injured, 6 Vehicles Damaged In AutoZone Parking Lot Crash

ParkingLotAccident

A loss of control can be dangerous when a person is behind the wheel. They can damage other vehicles and cause harm to others.

This is what recently happened in Osceola County. A parking lot crash left three people injured and six vehicles damaged. The accident happened on the afternoon of March 18 in Kissimmee.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a vehicle swerved off the road for unknown reasons. It hit a sign and slammed into multiple parked cars before overturning in the parking lot at the AutoZone near the intersection of Osceola Parkway and Old Dixie Highway.

A bystander, an unidentified man, was hit by the out-of-control vehicle. The pedestrian, the driver, and a passenger were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. All three are expected to recover from their injuries.

There was significant damage to the vehicles in the parking lot. Investigators are still trying to determine exactly what caused the driver to lose control. No charges have been filed at this time. The accident is still under investigation.

Dangers of Parking Lot Accidents

Parking lot accidents might seem minor because speeds are low, but they can still cause serious injuries, costly damage, and legal disputes. Some common causes of these crashes include:

  • Limited visibility: Tightly packed vehicles, large SUVs, and structural obstacles (like pillars or landscaping) can block a driver’s view. This makes it difficult to see oncoming cars or pedestrians, especially when backing out of a space.
  • Pedestrians: Parking lots are full of pedestrians who are often distracted, carrying items, or walking with children. Unlike roads, there are fewer clearly marked walkways, and drivers may not expect people to appear suddenly between cars.
  • Tight maneuvers: Many accidents occur when drivers reverse at the same time or misjudge distance while parking. These accidents often lead to disputes about who had the right of way.

Parking lots are tricky, as they tend to lack clear traffic patterns, protective barriers, and adequate separation between vehicles and foot traffic. This means that these accidents often come with legal and insurance complications:

  • Determining fault is often harder due to lack of traffic signals or clear right-of-way rules.
  • Surveillance footage may or may not be available.
  • Insurance companies may assign shared liability, reducing compensation.

Pedestrians hit by vehicles in parking lots often have strong claims, particularly when they were in the area legally and had no ability to avoid the crash.

To reduce risk, drivers should:

  • Drive slowly and expect sudden movement.
  • Use backup cameras but do not rely on them alone.
  • Look both ways before reversing.
  • Avoid distractions while in parking lots.
  • Watch for pedestrians at all times.
