1 Killed In Crash In Kissimmee Construction Zone

ConstructionZone

Car accidents can be complex. They can cause chain-reaction events that can sometimes affect vehicles on the side of the road. Crashes can also be more complex when they occur in construction zones.

A construction zone crash recently killed one person and injured another. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of April 25 on I-4 in Kissimmee.

A 53-year-old Davenport woman was driving a Jeep Wrangler. She was heading west on I-4 when she attempted to switch lanes. In doing so, she rear-ended a Toyota Scion XB.

The impact of the crash caused the Jeep to rotate and hit a guardrail. The Toyota hit the back of a construction truck parked on the shoulder.

The woman driving the Jeep was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The Toyota driver, a 41-year-old man from Lakeland, died at the accident scene. The driver of the construction truck, a 33-year-old man from St. Cloud, was not injured in the crash. The accident is still under investigation.

Driving Safely in Construction Zones

Driving in construction zones comes with various dangers and hazards. Here are some to look for:

  • Narrow or shifted lanes. Temporary lane realignments can confuse drivers or leave less room to maneuver, increasing the risk of sideswipe collisions.
  • Reduced visibility. Dust, construction barriers, and poor lighting (especially at night) can obscure workers, signs, or equipment.
  • Unexpected stops. Traffic may slow or stop suddenly due to lane closures or merging vehicles, leading to rear-end crashes.
  • Distracted or speeding drivers. Drivers who are inattentive or fail to adjust speed often cause accidents in these zones.
  • Construction vehicles and equipment. Slow-moving machinery entering or exiting the roadway creates unexpected hazards.
  • Workers on foot. Road workers are especially vulnerable to injury if drivers aren’t alert and cautious.
  • Debris and uneven surfaces. Loose gravel, uneven pavement, or debris can cause tire damage, skidding, or loss of control.

Driving in a construction zone can be frustrating. Here are some tips to help:

  • Slow down early. Begin reducing speed as soon as you see warning signs. Speeding fines are often doubled in these zones, and slower speeds give you more time to react.
  • Obey all posted signs. Construction zones may have temporary signs that override permanent ones. These include lane shifts, detours, and reduced speed limits.
  • Increase following distance. Leave at least 3 to 4 seconds between your car and the one in front of you. Sudden braking is common, and tailgating can lead to dangerous rear-end collisions.
  • Stay in your lane. Don’t weave or change lanes unless directed. Lane lines may be unclear or temporary, and sudden moves can put you in the path of construction workers or equipment.
  • Watch for workers and equipment. Stay alert for people on foot and machinery that may enter your lane unexpectedly. Workers may not always be visible until you’re very close.
