Kissimmee Man Killed In Head-On Crash With Semi Truck

TruckGrill2

Nobody wants to be involved in a crash with a semi truck. These vehicles can weigh 40 tons and cause fatalities in an accident.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Davenport. A man was killed in not just an ordinary car crash, but one involving hitting a semi truck head on. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of June 13 on U.S. 17/92.

The crash happened at U.S. 17/92 and Sunny Acres Road. A 37-year-old man from Kissimmee was driving a semi truck south when he saw a Toyota Corolla drifting across the center line. The Toyota crossed the center line multiple times and traveled toward the semi truck. The driver, a 38-year-old Kissimmee man, eventually crossed entirely out of the northbound lane and into the southbound lane, into the path of the semi.

The truck driver attempted to brake to lessen the impact of the crash. However, the driver lost control and the two vehicles collided, causing severe front-end damage to both vehicles.

When first responders arrived, they declared the Toyota driver dead at the accident scene. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said a cellphone was found in his hand, leading them to believe that distracted driving played a role in the crash.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Head-On Crashes Involving Semi Trucks

Head-on collisions are among the deadliest types of motor vehicle accidents, and when a semi truck is involved, the consequences can be catastrophic.

Common causes include:

  • Driver fatigue. Truck drivers often spend long hours on the road. Although federal regulations limit driving hours, fatigue remains a significant problem in the trucking industry. A tired driver may drift across the center line or enter oncoming traffic.
  • Distracted driving. Using a cellphone, adjusting a GPS, eating, or other distractions can take a truck driver’s attention away from the road. Even a momentary lapse in concentration can lead to a head-on crash.
  • Impaired driving. Alcohol, illegal drugs, and certain prescription medications can impair judgment and reaction times. While commercial drivers are held to stricter standards regarding alcohol consumption, impaired driving still contributes to serious truck accidents.
  • Excessive speed reduces a truck driver’s ability to react to changing road conditions or hazards. Speeding also increases the distance required to stop a large commercial vehicle, making it easier to cross into oncoming traffic.
  • Improper passing. Passing another vehicle on a two-lane road without sufficient visibility or space can result in a truck colliding head-on with an approaching vehicle.
