Kissimmee Man Killed In Motorcycle Crash

Motorcycles may get involved in crashes for various reasons. Left-turn accidents are especially common and often deadly.
Sadly, this was recently the case in Orange County. A motorcyclist was killed after his motorcycle was hit by a vehicle making a turn. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of December 19 near State Road 417.
An 18-year-old man was driving a Subaru Impreza north on Landstar Boulevard, approaching SR-417. At the same time, a KTM motorcycle was traveling south on Landstar Boulevard.
The Subaru made a left turn into the motorcycle’s path. The right side of the car hit the motorcycle. The motorcyclist, a 20-year-old man from Kissimmee, was taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center. He arrived in critical condition but later died from his injuries.
The driver of the Subaru, an 18-year-old man from Orlando, was not injured. He remained at the accident scene.
The northbound lanes on Landstar Boulevard were shut down for some time. The accident is under investigation.
Left-Turn Accidents Involving Motorcycles
Left-turn accidents are one of the most dangerous types of crashes involving motorcycles. These collisions are very common and typically occur when a driver turning left at an intersection fails to see an oncoming motorcyclist and pulls directly into their path. Because motorcycles are smaller and less visible than passenger vehicles, riders are especially vulnerable in these situations.
A major cause of left-turn motorcycle accidents is a lack of driver perception. Motorcycles can be harder to spot, particularly at night, in bad weather, or when they are partially obscured by other vehicles. Drivers may misjudge a motorcycle’s speed or assume it is farther away than it actually is, leading them to turn when it is unsafe.
Intersection design and traffic conditions also play a role. Busy intersections, multiple lanes of traffic, and visual distractions can increase the risk of a driver overlooking a motorcyclist. In some cases, drivers focus on larger vehicles and fail to scan thoroughly for motorcycles before making a turn.
The severity of injuries in left-turn motorcycle crashes is often high. When a vehicle turns in front of a motorcycle, the rider has little time or space to brake or evade the collision. These crashes frequently result in traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones, internal injuries, and road rash. Even with protective gear, motorcyclists can suffer life-altering or fatal injuries.
Fault in left-turn accidents is commonly placed on the turning driver. Traffic laws generally require drivers making left turns to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic traveling straight. When a motorist violates this duty, they may be held legally responsible for the crash and resulting damages.
