Motorcyclist Killed In Osceola County Crash

MotorcycleAccident29

Left-turn crashes involving motorcycles can be deadly. Many vehicles make turns in front of motorcycles, either because they expect them to slow down or they simply cannot see them. Visibility is a major issue with motorcycles, as motorists in passenger vehicles have a hard time seeing them due to size differences.

Sadly, a recent motorcycle crash in Florida turned deadly. A 34-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Pleasant Hill Road in Osceola County. The fatal crash occurred on the morning of July 13 in Kissimmee.

A motorcyclist was traveling south on Pleasant Hill Road, north of Kinglet Boulevard. The man was on a Ducati motorcycle while a 61-year-old man was driving a Nissan Titan on the same road but in the opposite direction. The driver of the Nissan attempted to make a left turn and crossed directly into the path of the motorcycle.

The two vehicles collided. The motorcyclist was taken to Osceola Regional Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the Nissan was taken to Poinciana Medical Center to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The southbound lanes of Pleasant Hill Road were blocked for some time after the accident. The crash is still under investigation.

Left-Turn Crashes Involving Motorcycles

A left-turn motorcycle accident usually happens when a car turns left at an intersection or into a driveway and crosses the path of an oncoming motorcycle. The result is often a direct collision, with the motorcyclist hitting the turning vehicle at high speed. Left-turn crashes involving motorcycles are unfortunately common and often severe.

They are common due to several main reasons:

  • Driver inattention. Many drivers simply don’t see motorcycles because they’re smaller and easier to overlook.
  • Misjudging speed. Drivers often underestimate how fast a motorcycle is traveling.
  • Failure to yield. Cars turning left must yield to oncoming traffic, but often don’t.
  • Blind spots. Blind spots or obstructed views can prevent drivers from seeing approaching bikes.

In most cases, the vehicle turning left is legally at fault for failing to yield. However, there are several exceptions:

  • The motorcyclist was speeding.
  • They ran a red light.
  • They were lane-splitting (this is currently legal only in California).

Before turning, motorists should always:

  • Double-check before turning left, especially at intersections.
  • Look for motorcycles, not just other cars.
  • Use their turn signal early.
  • Avoid distractions.

Motorcyclists can do their part by using headlights and wearing bright clothing to stay visible. They should also approach intersections with caution, even if you have the right of way.
