1 Injured After SunRail Train Hits Vehicle In Orange County

Getting caught on railroad tracks is probably every driver’s worst nightmare. This recently happened to a Florida motorist and the vehicle was hit by a train. So far, they have survived the devastating crash.
Emergency responders transported the driver to a hospital following a collision between a SunRail commuter train and a vehicle on the evening of January 26. The accident happened along Holden Avenue in Edgewood when a vehicle stopped on the railroad tracks as a southbound SunRail train approached.
Police investigators from the Edgewood Police Department say rail crossing lights and warning signals were active before the train arrived, indicating the crossing was functioning properly at the time of the incident. Officers determined the driver of the vehicle had stopped on the tracks in violation of Florida law governing obedience to traffic control devices at railroad crossings.
The train struck the vehicle on the driver’s side, and firefighters worked to extricate the person inside. That individual was then taken to a local hospital for treatment. Officials have not released details on the person’s condition.
The train appeared to have several passengers aboard at the time of the crash, but nobody was injured. According to SunRail, the train involved, Train P333, was delayed 75 minutes for police assistance near the tracks. Trains P334 and P335 were delayed for 50 minutes, while Train P336 had a 30-minute delay.
What to Know About Train-Car Crashes
Train–car crashes are among the most devastating traffic collisions due to the massive size, speed, and stopping distance of trains. Even at low speeds, a passenger vehicle offers little protection when struck by a locomotive or rail car, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities.
Most train–car crashes occur at railroad crossings, especially when drivers misjudge a train’s speed, attempt to beat the train, or stop on the tracks due to traffic congestion. In some cases, crashes happen despite warning signals, while in others, malfunctioning gates, obstructed views, or inadequate signage may play a role.
Because trains cannot stop quickly, engineers often have little or no ability to avoid a collision once a vehicle is on the tracks. As a result, impacts frequently cause crushing injuries, traumatic brain injuries, spinal damage, amputations, and death. Survivors may face long-term medical care, lost income, and permanent disabilities.
Liability in train–car crashes can be complex. While driver error is common, rail companies, local governments, or third-party contractors may share responsibility if crossing equipment fails, vegetation blocks sightlines, or safety regulations are not followed.
