3 Killed In Head-On Crash In Osceola County

Rollover5

There are traffic controls and laws in place for a reason. Millions of drivers travel on Florida’s roadways daily, so it’s helpful for drivers to know how to act. Still, drivers still get in serious and even fatal crashes daily.

Sadly, this recently happened in Osceola County. A pickup truck was traveling in the wrong direction when it collided head-on with an SUV. Three people in the SUV were killed in the crash.

The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of March 16 in Kenansville. A Ford F-150 was traveling south in the northbound lane of North Kenansville Road, also known as U.S. 441. At the same time, a Toyota RAV-4 was heading north on the same road, near Yates Ranch Road.

The pickup truck was traveling in the direct path of the SUV. This caused both vehicles to collide head-on. The impact caused the SUV to exit the roadway and overturn.

The driver of the truck, a 30-year-old man from Jensen Beach, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. The driver of the SUV, a 34-year-old Orlando man, and a 9-month old baby also suffered minor injuries. They were taken to a local hospital.

Two passengers in the SUV, two Orlando women ages 34 and 54, died at the accident scene. A 5-year-old boy was seriously injured and taken to the hospital, where he later died. The crash is still under investigation.

What to Do When a Wrong-Way Driver is Coming at You

Wrong-way driving has unfortunately become a common issue not only in Florida but across the country. People are constantly driving recklessly. Therefore, it is helpful to know what to do if you are ever in that situation. Some tips include the following:

  • Stay calm and alert. Keep a firm grip on the wheel and focus on safely avoiding the oncoming vehicle.
  • Slow down. Reducing your speed lessens the impact force if a crash occurs and gives you more time to react.
  • Move right. Wrong-way drivers often drift into the left lane (their right). Move to the right shoulder if possible.
  • Flash your lights and honk. This may alert the wrong-way driver to their mistake.
  • Avoid sudden movements. Quick swerving can cause you to lose control or hit another vehicle.
  • Call 911. If it’s safe, report the wrong-way driver immediately with their location and description.
  • Exit the roadway. If necessary, take the nearest safe exit or pull over until the danger passes.
