Bicyclist Killed In Crash With Vehicle At Kissimmee Intersection

When bicycles collide with passenger vehicles, the results can be deadly. Sadly, this was recently the case in Kissimmee.
A crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist occurred at South John Young Parkway at Osceola Village Road. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of February 14.
The car and the bicycle collided for unknown reasons. The collision caused the bicyclist to be thrown through the vehicle’s windshield. The person died at the accident scene. The Kissimmee Police confirmed the fatality and the Crime Scene Unit investigated.
The crash shut down all northbound lanes of South John Young Parkway for several hours.
Causes of Bicycle Crashes
Bicycle accidents can happen for a number of reasons. Sometimes they are caused by motor vehicles:
- Failure to yield. Drivers often fail to yield at intersections, crosswalks, or when turning, leading to collisions with cyclists who have the right of way.
- Right-hook and left-cross accidents. A right hook happens when a vehicle turns right across a cyclist’s path. A left cross occurs when a driver turns left into an oncoming cyclist.
- Distracted driving. Texting, using GPS, adjusting controls, or eating while driving significantly increases the risk of striking cyclists.
- High speeds reduce reaction time and increase crash severity, making even minor impacts dangerous or fatal.
- Dooring accidents. Opening a parked car door into a cyclist’s path can cause sudden, severe crashes.
Bicyclists may cause accidents as well. Some examples include:
- Failure to obey traffic laws. Running red lights, ignoring stop signs, riding against traffic, or improper lane positioning can lead to collisions.
- Loss of control. Sudden braking, sharp turns, or riding on loose gravel can cause skidding or tipping.
- Poor visibility. Lack of lights, reflectors, or bright clothing makes cyclists harder to see.
- New riders may struggle with balance, braking, and traffic awareness.
Road and environmental factors may also come into play:
- Poor road conditions. Potholes, uneven pavement, debris, oil slicks, and loose gravel increase fall risks.
- Construction zones. Narrow lanes, shifting traffic patterns, and uneven surfaces can be especially dangerous.
- Weather conditions. Rain, fog, snow, and strong winds reduce traction, visibility, and control.
Common bicycle accident injuries include:
- Concussions and traumatic brain injuries. These injuries can cause headaches, dizziness, memory loss, long-term cognitive impairment, emotional changes, seizures, and permanent disability.
- Facial fractures. Broken nose, jaw, cheekbones, and orbital bones are common when cyclists are thrown forward.
- Whiplash and neck strains. Sudden stops or collisions can hyperextend the neck, causing pain, stiffness, and mobility issues.
- Broken bones. Instinctively reaching out to break a fall often leads to fractures in the wrists, forearms, and hands.
- Soft tissue injuries. Sprains, strains, bruises, and torn ligaments are common.
- Knee injuries. Meniscus tears, ligament damage, and kneecap fractures often result from bicycle accidents.
