Woman Killed In Kissimmee Pedestrian Accident

Pedestrians do not always have the right of way. When they attempt to cross busy roads, there is a high possibility of getting hit by a car and becoming seriously injured or killed.
Sadly, this was recently the case in Kissimmee. A woman was killed after she was hit by an SUV while crossing the road. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of January 8 in Kissimmee.
A 66-year-old Kissimmee woman attempted to cross Kings Highway, near Henry Partin Road. She walked in the path of an SUV heading south. The SUV hit the woman. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.
There were two people inside the SUV — a 46-year-old male driver and a 16-year-old female passenger. Both were from Kindred. Neither were injured in the crash.
Both remained at the accident scene and they were both wearing seat belts. The crash is still under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Risks of Being a Pedestrian
Being a pedestrian comes with various risks, especially in areas with heavy traffic or poor driver behavior. Here are some of the main dangers pedestrians face:
- Collisions with vehicles. The most significant danger is being struck by cars, motorcycles, or bicycles, especially at intersections or while jaywalking.
- Distracted driving. Drivers using phones or other distractions may fail to notice pedestrians.
- Speeding. Vehicles traveling at high speeds reduce reaction time and increase the severity of collisions.
- Lack of sidewalks. Walking on roads without sidewalks forces pedestrians into traffic.
- Poorly marked crosswalks. Inadequate or unmarked crosswalks increase the likelihood of accidents.
- Insufficient lighting. Dark streets and crosswalks make pedestrians harder to see, especially at night.
- Adverse weather. Rain, snow, or fog can reduce visibility and make surfaces slippery for both pedestrians and vehicles.
- Construction zones. These areas often lack clear pathways, putting pedestrians at risk of injury.
- Red light runners: Drivers failing to stop at red lights or stop signs can hit crossing pedestrians.
- Impatient drivers: Some may ignore right-of-way rules or fail to yield to pedestrians.
There are some people who face a higher risk of pedestrian accidents than others. Children and the elderly may be less aware of traffic rules or slower to react, increasing their risk. Also, disabled pedestrians face a high risk. They suffer from mobility challenges and face unique risks on poorly designed streets.
In any case, pedestrian safety is the responsibility of both pedestrians and motorists. People need to be alert when on the roadway.
