Man Killed In Bicycle Crash In Lake County

While cycling is a great form of exercise, bicycles have to share the road with cars and trucks weighing thousands of pounds. This is a recipe for disaster.
Sadly, a recent bicycle crash led to fatality. A man was killed in a bicycle-SUV crash in Clermont on the morning of August 5.
The fatal crash happened on U.S. Highway 192 and Town Center Boulevard. A Jeep Wrangler and bicycle collided, but there are no details about the circumstances.
The bicyclist, an adult male, died at the scene. His identity has not been made public. The driver of the Jeep, a 42-year-old man from Kissimmee, remained at the accident scene. He was not injured.
The crash is still under investigation. More information will be released once available.
Why Bicycle-SUV Crashes Can Cause Severe Injuries and Fatalities
Collisions between bicycles and SUVs can result in devastating injuries and fatalities because cyclists have little protection from the force of a much larger and heavier vehicle. Unlike occupants of passenger vehicles, bicyclists are exposed and may absorb the full impact of the collision.
Several factors can make these crashes especially dangerous:
- The size and weight difference: SUVs typically weigh thousands of pounds more than a bicycle. Even at relatively low speeds, the force of impact can throw a cyclist onto the pavement or into the path of the vehicle.
- Higher front ends: Many SUVs have taller, more vertical front profiles than smaller passenger cars. An SUV may strike a cyclist higher on the body, increasing the risk of serious injuries to the legs, torso, chest, or head.
- Greater risk of being knocked down or run over: The initial impact may not be the only danger. A cyclist can be thrown under the vehicle, into another lane of traffic, or onto a hard surface.
- Blind spots: Larger vehicles can have significant blind spots, particularly directly in front of and behind the vehicle. Drivers may fail to see cyclists when turning, changing lanes, backing up, or pulling out of driveways and parking spaces.
- Speed and impact force: As vehicle speed increases, so does the energy involved in a collision. A cyclist may suffer catastrophic injuries even when the SUV does not appear to have extensive damage.
- Limited protection for the cyclist: Helmets and other safety gear can reduce the risk of certain injuries, but they cannot provide the same protection as a vehicle’s seat belts, airbags, and reinforced passenger compartment.
