Man Killed In Motorcycle Crash After Speeding, Striking Curb

Many people see motorcycles as fun vehicles. While they can be fun, they can also be very dangerous.
Hitting a curb may not be too serious in a car, but in a motorcycle, it can be deadly. It caused a Florida man to be ejected from his motorcycle and killed.
A 49-year-old man from Orlando was recently killed in such a crash. The fatal accident occurred in the early morning hours of March 1 on South Orange Avenue, north of Wetherbee Road.
The man was on his motorcycle heading south. He was traveling above the posted speed limit when he failed to negotiate a curve. The motorcycle ran off the right side of the road. It then hit a curb, causing the rider to be ejected.
The rider was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
Can a Person Get Compensation for Causing Their Own Crash?
While the man in this case was killed in the crash, a person can typically receive compensation if they were injured in an accident, even if they were fully liable.
In Florida, you can receive compensation for injuries primarily through your own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance. Because Florida is a no-fault state, PIP covers 80% of medical bills and 60% of lost wages (up to $10,000), regardless of who is at fault.
PIP does not cover damages to your own car. You would need optional collision coverage for that.
Why Is Hitting a Curb Dangerous in a Motorcycle?
Hitting a curb on a motorcycle is far more dangerous than it sounds. Unlike cars, motorcycles rely on two narrow tires for balance. A sudden impact with a fixed object like a curb can instantly destabilize the bike and throw the rider.
Motorcycles stay upright through balance and forward motion. When a tire hits a curb:
- The wheel can abruptly stop or deflect sideways.
- The suspension compresses unevenly.
- The rider can be thrown off balance instantly.
At moderate or high speeds, this often leads to a crash within seconds.
Tire and wheel damage can also occur. Curbs are rigid concrete edges. Impacting one can:
- Bend or crack the wheel rim.
- Blow out a tire.
- Damage the front forks or suspension.
If the front wheel strikes the curb at an angle:
- The bike can violently flip upright and throw the rider.
- The rider may be launched over the handlebars.
- The motorcycle can slide into traffic.
Even at low speeds, a curb can act like a ramp and cause the bike to tip.
