Motorcyclist Killed In Crash With Pickup Truck
Florida has one of the highest rates of motorcycle accidents, injuries, and deaths in the United States. The Sunshine State has a large number of riders due to its beautiful weather. However, motorcycles face many dangers on the roadways, especially if they collide with much larger vehicles.
Sadly, this was recently the case in St. Cloud. A motorcycle rider was killed when a pickup truck turned in his path, causing a head-on collision. The fatal crash occurred on the evening of February 10.
A Mitsubishi Raider pickup truck was heading south on Holopaw Road, near Concord Road. At the same time, a Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling north on Holopaw Road. The driver of the pickup truck made a left turn to travel east on Concord Road and ended up in the direct path of the motorcycle. As a result, the fronts of both vehicles collided.
The motorcycle rider, a 62-year-old man from St. Cloud, died at the accident scene. The driver of the pickup truck, a 65-year-old man also from St. Cloud, was not injured. He remained at the accident scene.
The accident resulted in a roadblock in the northbound and southbound lanes of Holopaw Road.
The crash is under investigation.
Head-on Crashes Involving Motorcycles
Head-on collisions involving motorcycles happen when the bike’s front end collides with the front end of another oncoming vehicle. Unlike a car, however, motorcycle head-on collisions usually involve catastrophic injuries, death, and total property loss. Often, head-on collisions result from road hazards, distracted driving, reckless driving, road rage, and intoxication. Either the motorcyclist or another driver may be at fault.
These are the risks that motorcycle riders must face when deciding to ride a vehicle that offers no enclosure, seat belts, airbags, or other protection. Motorcycle riders are placed in an unfortunate position of exposure to risks and elements that passenger car and commercial vehicle operators rarely face. Riders are taking their lives into their own hands every time they get on their bike. They face far more significant risks than the dangers faced by those who ride in passenger vehicles.
Injuries are common, especially when a rider is not wearing a helmet. In Florida, only riders under 21 must wear helmets when riding a motorcycle. Riders over the age of 21 can forgo wearing a helmet if they have at least $10,000 in insurance coverage. Back and neck injuries, facial injuries, compound fractures, paralysis, amputations, internal bleeding, organ damage, and brain damage are all possible injuries in a motorcycle crash.
